Frequently Asked Questions

What can acupuncture treat?

Because acupuncture works to address the root imbalance, or cause of disease, it has the potential to reverse any unwanted symptoms in the body. Returning the body to a healthy balance can help kick-start a process of self-healing. Your body is wise, and it knows what it’s doing. Sometimes all it needs is a little support! With this in mind, we will look at your life history and habits to decide which are contributing to your symptoms and work to make lifestyle changes that will support your journey toward vitality and wellbeing.

Acupuncture really shines in a self-care routine to prevent disease before it begins and promote health, energy and vitality.

I'm afraid of
Does it hurt?

Feeling nervous about needles is incredibly common. Most people find that they are pleasantly surprised by how painless acupuncture really is.

Haunted by the image of a shot at the doctor’s office? Imagine this: acupuncture needles are so tiny that you can fit between 18 and 40 of them on the tip of a hypodermic needle. The most you’ll feel is a tiny pinch followed by a whole lot of relaxation.

How many treatments will I need?

Working holistically with your body’s self-healing and balancing processes requires us to listen carefully to your body’s individual needs and timing. So as far as treatments go, everyone is different. We take into consideration the duration and severity of your condition as well as the speed of your recovery. Typically we begin with more frequent treatments as we train the body to accept a new balanced state of being. Our goal is to return you to a state of optimal health and use acupuncture to prevent problems in the future. It typically takes around six treatments for symptoms to resolve, with more chronic or challenging cases taking ten or more.

Is acupuncture safe?
Are there side effects?

Acupuncture is incredibly safe. All needles come from sterile packages and are only used once. Acupuncturists are extensively trained in human anatomy and medical safety as it relates to acupuncture, and they must conform to NCCAOM clean needle standards. A little bruising is possible, but rare. The most common side effect of acupuncture is relaxation!

How long do treatments last?

Just like a good exercise routine can boost your metabolism long after you’ve finished working out, acupuncture treatments can continue to positively impact your body and promote change and new healing for as long as 24-48 hours after treatment. While acupuncture starts to work immediately, most people feel the most significant response to treatment within twelve hours, or after they wake up the next day.

How should I prepare for my first appointment?

Your first appointment at Waterfront Acupuncture + Wellness will be your longest (up to 90 minutes), as we will extensively discuss your medical history and lifestyle to prepare a treatment plan that’s right for you. Expect about 20-30 minutes of conversation followed by your first treatment. All follow-up treatments will take no longer than one hour. We will briefly discuss your progress since your last visit before your treatment begins.

Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing. For most treatments we will need access up to your knees and elbows. Feel free to bring a change of clothes with you.

Please eat a light meal or snack and be sure you’re hydrated before treatments. Excessive hunger or thirst may lead to dizziness or fatigue, and may decrease the effectiveness of treatment.

It is helpful to familiarize yourself with any medications or supplements you are taking before your treatment. A written list of names and dosage information is very helpful.
