What is Qi (Energy)?

When Acupuncturists discuss the human body, they usually describe things in terms of “Qi” (chee). What is Qi and how does it impact health and wellness? Read on to find out!

The word “Qi” usually translates to mean “Vital Energy”. In Chinese Medical Classic texts, life is created when qi is condensed and gathered into solid form. Qi makes up everything physical and nonphysical in the universe. The physical or material aspects of Qi include the ground beneath your feet, your house, the weather and flesh and blood. The nonphysical or immaterial aspects of Qi include light, movement, heat, nerve impulses, thoughts and emotions. In the human body, Qi is the energy or force that allows blood to move and thoughts and emotions to flow. 

When disease is present in the body it means that Qi has been damaged in some way. This can happen in one of two ways: Qi can be malnourished or overused (deficiency or excess). Qi is malnourished through lack of food, shelter, movement, mental stimulation or love. Qi can be overused by exposure to toxins and extreme temperatures, overeating (especially junk food), excessive emotions, excessive physical activity or overthinking. 

Deficiency and excess both do the same thing-they inhibit the flow of qi causing stagnation. Stagnation, or lack of free movement, of qi and blood in the body is the number one cause of pain and disease. Acupuncture helps by moving qi and restoring free flow or emotions, blood, and energy. This brings the body back into balance and allows it to heal itself naturally!
